Dubois High School Collection

In the heart of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, there once stood a building that was much more than just a school. It was a symbol of hope, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity. The Dubois School was built in 1939 and served as a pillar of the African American community for decades. In the 1960s, as the fight for civil rights raged on, tensions were high in Mt. Sterling. The city was one of the last in Kentucky to integrate its schools, and African American parents were preparing to boycott the schools to protest a change in integration plans. But on a fateful day in August of 1964, the Dubois School was burned down in an act of arson. The fire destroyed the entire building, and with it, a piece of African American history in Mt. Sterling. Despite this devastating setback, the community rallied together to rebuild the school. They refused to let the actions of a few destroy their hope and determination. And in the end, their efforts paid off. The Dubois School rose from the ashes, stronger and more resilient than ever before. Today, owning a piece of the historic Dubois School is a way to honor the strength and determination of the African American community in Mt. Sterling. It is a symbol of hope in the face of adversity, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, we can rise above and come out stronger on the other side. Whether you’re a collector of historical artifacts, or simply someone who wants to be a part of this incredible story, owning a piece of the Dubois School is a truly special experience. It’s a way to keep the spirit of the school alive, and to honor the legacy of the brave individuals who fought for justice and equality in Mt. Sterling.
